Historic Environment Records or HERs are a record of all known archaeology in a County or Local Authority. You may also still hear these records called the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR).
These are your first port of call when trying to find out what archaeological activity has gone on in a particular area. When searching on line you should also try the Archaeology Data Service catalogue called ArcSearch. The Archaeology Data Service continues to make reports on sites available that you may not otherwise have easy access to. These reports are known as grey literature. North Yorkshire County Council have scanned and released about 1000 of our grey literature reports online via the ADS Grey Literature Library. You will find them by searching ArcSearch.
Our local HERs are:
York City Council. York City Council HER is now searchable through the Heritage Gateway maintained by English Heritage.
You can now view the York City HER through York LocalView Archaeology. This allows you to find sites monuments and other information on a map and in some cases link to more details.
York City HER is now developing a map view that allows you to access many actual site reports, Click here to take a look.
- Note: Scroll down to find the maps. The top map shows archaeological events, you can access reports on some of these. Basically click on the yellow stars. Zoom in a bit before clicking, the stars that remain yellow have a report linked to them.
North Yorkshire County Council. North Yorkshire County Council HER is also now searchable through the Heritage Gateway maintained by English Heritage.
East Riding of Yorkshire County Council. The HER for the East Riding is administered by the Humber Archaeology Partnership. This HER is not yet searchable through the Heritage Gateway.
